Using Start and End properties

Learn how to use the built-in date logic for dimensions to help create time-dependent items

In your model, there are scenarios where the value of Dimension items is only relevant for a specific time period. For instance:

  • When projecting Employee salaries, you might want the employee cost to take effect from a particular month for future hires.
  • When planning a product launch, you may want to model the revenue from a new product starting in a specific month and cease revenue from old products.

In Blox, you can achieve this without complex formulas or logic by utilizing the Start and End properties in dimensions.

Setup

Enabling the settings

To enable start and end dates in Blox, ensure the following conditions are met:

  1. Ensure the 'Enable start and end dates' property is enabled in the dimension settings.
  2. Create a property in the dimension called 'Start' and/or 'End' (or 'Start date' and 'End date')

💡Tip: If set up correctly, the field in the dimension page should automatically update to be a Calendar selector instead of a text input.

How does it work?

Once the settings are enabled, Blox automatically applies the logic when property values for that dimension are referenced in a formula.

Values will only be applied to months that fall between the start and end periods of the model.

💡Tips:

  • Values can be left empty. In this case the value will apply to all time periods in the model
  • If you only want to use start or end, but not necessarily both - this still works too
